NSW Comprehensive Property Addressing System Program (CPAS)

November 12, 2012

AS/NZS 4819, Data, Standards

As may be obvious from my previous posts ( eg AS/NZS4819)  I’ve long been an advocate for street address information as a rather useful thing, particularly in the development of web services and automated processes for service delivery.  I’m very pleased to have joined the Geonaming Solutions Team, working for NSW Land and Property Information (LPI) on the NSW CPAS program.  A major part of the CPAS program is the investigation into the regulatory and administrative framework for addressing.

LPI has recently undertaken a questionnaire of local government to better understand addressing challenges and assess where the state-wide framework for addressing can be improved, in areas such as

  • Policies, Procedures and Guidelines and  support for councils
  • Road Naming and Naming on highways
  • Notifying persons of a road name
  • Opening and Dedication of roads
  • Property Numbers and Creating and capturing address information at the earliest possible stage
  • Complex Addressing
  • Databases
  • Rural Addressing

It is very encouraging that so many NSW councils have taken part in the questionnaires, the first of which LPI delivered at the Local Government Spatial Seminar in Sydney, March 2012. This engagement is critical to sustain this important initiative.

Added May 2013

The issues of addressing standards in NSW has been picked up in the NSW Local Government Review, with submissions from

Another recently “found item”, an informative  new document published by LPI “Searching the Registrar General’s Maps and Plans” March 2013

It is also encouraging to see so many NSW Councils moving to adopt the changes in the 2011 version of AS/NZS4819
